Capital punishment for girls

Wolves' U-16 girls will be relieved to return home on Saturday after successive trips to London resulted in narrow losses.

A 55-2 loss at CoLA Southwark Pride was followed by a 64-62 defeat by London Lions on Sunday.

The loss at Lions was particularly frustrating for Wolves as were called for 28 fouls, while the home side had just eight and went to the foul line 35 times compared to Oaklands' nine.

In a tight game throughout, Lions led 17-15 at the first break before Wolves finished the second period strongly to take a 33-32 lead into the locker room at half-time. Lions took a 49-48 lead into the final break but although Wolves started the fourth period well to lead by two with just under eight minutes on the clock, as the fouls mounted the hosts led by five with three minutes on the clock and despite Caitlin Ryan's buzzer-beating three the London side took the win.

Amye Swinney led Wolves' scoring with 20 points, adding four rebounds. Lily Harkness added eight points, Stella Pisciteli-Ekblad had eight points and nine rebounds and Ryan missed a double-double by a point with 13 boards.

The previous week saw a poor second half performance led to Wolves' first league defeat of the campaign.

The visitors were quick out of the blocks as they led 18-6 at the first break, and they looked comfortable at half-time with a 31-18 lead. But as they suffered foul trouble in the second half and CoLA cut the lead to 41-37 at the final break before closing out the win with a 17-11 fourth period.

Swinney and Ryan both finished with double-doubles, adding 14 and 11 points respectively to their 11 rebounds. Swinney played for 39 minutes while Ryan fouled out with 2;12 on the clock on what would have been her fourth block.Pisciteli-Ekblad was limited to under 15 minutes of action due to foul trouble, finishing with eight points, four rebounds and three steals, while harkness had five boards to go with her seven points.
