Under-14s win league title

Updated: Mar 22, 2022

Wolves under-14 girls recorded two big wins over the weekend to clinch the NBL East Division title.

Cambridge Cats were beaten 84-32 on the road on Saturday before the title was clinched with a 77-49 home victory against Brentwood Fire the following afternoon.

Emerson Westerby’s side will now be at home in the play-off first round on Sunday April 3, and if they are successful they will also play at Oaklands in the last eight. The Final Four takes place at the National Basketball Performance Centre in May.

Darcy McRae had another big game at Cambridge, finishing with 30 points, Maliya Lawal added 25 while Darcey Judge and Paris Mitchell-Tyson finished with 10 points apiece.

The following day’s game was a revenge mission for the young Wolves as one of their two league losses had come at Brentwood under controversial circumstances, but there never looked any chance of a repeat as Westerby’s side led from tip-to-buzzer.

Mitchell-Tyson led the way with 17 points despite getting in early foul trouble, with Lawal

A 17-10 first period lead grew to 36-20 going into the locker room at half-time. The hosts edged further ahead with a 17-15 third quarter before they wrapped up the title with a 24-14 final period.

Wolves had set up the title deciding weekend with a pair of victories last week as they completed a hectic final fortnight of the regular season as a 78-27 victory at Kent Crusaders was followed by a 52-21 home win against Norfolk Demons.

It was a big weekend for McRea as she followed a 32-point haul against Kent by adding 18 against Norfolk.
