Division 1 Men: Preview

Writer: Oaklands WolvesOaklands Wolves

Wolves men start the final quarter of their Division One campaign on Sunday as they travel to Wildcats Arena to face high-flying Derby Trailblazers, on Sunday.

Thomas Baker's team have five games left of the league season and still have to face the fourth placed 'Blazers twice as well as a pair of games against a Newcastle side who sit in fifth spot and a trip to Leicester Warriors.

It will be Wolves' third trip to Nottingham this season and their second in nine days having beaten hosts Hoods last Saturday, but they were unable to complete a winning weekend when they lost at Barking Abbey the following day, and are now 13th in the table with a 3-11 record.

Trailblazers have nine wins from 12 games in a season which has seen them unable to access either of their venues and being forced to move both games and practice to Nottingham.

Baker is looking for an improvement following the defeat in east London: “After some mixed feelings over last week’s performances, we will be looking to improve against an experienced Derby team" he said. "We are aware of the issues defensively that we must solve and this continues to be a key area of focus for us. With the end of season fast approaching, we must be locked in each week!”

American pair Jacob Conway and Malcolm Smith lead the scoring for Matt Shaw's team with 19.4 and 16.6 point per game respectively, with rookie Conway adding 2.7 assists and 1.4 steals.

The game will see two of the league's leading rebounders and blockers up against each other. Derby big man Oliver Stanley is second in boards with 11.1rpg and third in blocks (1.4), but it is more a surprise to see Wolves' guard/forward AJ Roberts topping the blocks chart with 1.7 per game and third in rebounds with 10.8 per game.
