ST ALBANS Wolves had a perfect weekend in the junior National Basketball League over the weekend with three victories.
The under-16 girls (pictured) made the trip to London Thunder on Saturday, and despite a disappointing shooting display came away with a 65-51 victory.
Led by 20 points, eight rebounds and five steals from Joanna Akpan, Wolves led 15-11 at the first break and pulled away to go into the locker room 37-23 up at half-time.
The third period proved to be tough going for Tor Freeman’s team as Thunder came out with all guns blazing and cut their deficit to 50-41 at the final break.
The home side made it a six point game early in the fourth period but some tough defence saw Wolves get the hosts in foul trouble and they pulled away down the stretch to seal the win.
Caitlin Ryan went dangerously close to the golden grail of a quadruple double with ten points, nine rebounds, nine assists and eight steals while Amye Swinney had nine points and three boards.
The following day saw the under-14 boys win 78-58 London Greenhouse Pioneers. Led by 20 points, eight assists and three rebounds from Jayden Harry, Wolves led 20-17 at the first break and took that advantage out to 39-31 at half-time.
That lead grew to 59-48 after three quarters, and Wolves wrapped things up with a 19-10 fourth period.
Cameron Turner finished with 18 points and six boards while Kayden Brown had six rebounds, as many assists and three steals.
In the weekend’s final game. 32 points and 14 rebounds from Simon Patasin helped Wolves under-16 boys overcame a poor second period to defeat Harrow Falcons 75-57.
Wolves led 17-12 after one period, but a poor second quarter saw the London side take a 37-33 advantage into the half-time break. The rest worked for the hosts as they outscored the Falcons 19-7 in the third period to lead by eight going into the fourth period and they wrapped things up with a 23-13 final stanza.
Alex Riley added nine rebounds and as many assists, while Milic Irvine had ten boards to go with six assists, four points and four assists.
