Junior round-up Dec 9/10
There was success for Wolves' two NBL development teams at the weekend with the U-15s beating West Herts Warriors U-16 II 72-66 and the U-13s recording a big 74-45 victory at Cambourne Falcons U-14.
Both teams have found the going tough playing in older age groups, with the U-13s always facing bigger opposition and the U-15s providing several players for the U-16 team, so both will be happy to go into the Christmas break.
Oliver Thomas [left] hit a clutch three-pointer to win a thriller against West Herts as La'Quarne Sayers' team collected their second win of the season but he'll have to share the headlines with Seth Coetzee [centre] who had a massive 36-point, 11 rebound double-double to lead the Wolves. Jacob Edrupt [right] also had a big game, adding seven assists and six steals to his 13 points. Wolves had started strongly with a 24-13 first period but the visitors refused to give in, and it wasn't until Thomas struck from downtown in the final minute that the win was sealed.
Meanwhile, a strong performance from a Wolves U-13 side missing several players saw them chalk up their fourth win of the season. After an even start, the second unit finished the opening period strongly to lead 17-8, and despite losing forward Rocky Starr with a suspected broken wrist, a 19-4 third period ended the game as a contest.
Alex Ryan and Ted Yu finished with 15 points apiece, with Ryan adding nine assists, six rebounds and as many steals. Danny Tsoutas chipped in with 11 points as all ten Wolves got on the scoresheet.
The U-14 boys kept their play-off hopes alive in the East Premier as they came back from 11 down at the end of the third period to win 96-89 at Ipswich.
Zac Butterworth followed up the previous week's 30-pont haul by dropping 35, with Liam Schertal adding 22 as Ibrahim Garbia's side moved up to third place in the table.
The U-16 boys' tough season continued as Otis Lau-Johnstone's 18 points weren't enough to prevent a 95-30 loss at London Stars as they never recovered from 27-4 first period deficit.
Finally, the U-14 girls will go into Christmas looking for their first league win of the campaign after a 66-50 home loss against Solent Kestrels, on Sunday.
Allison Day's team trailed 44-20 at half-time but a big third period saw them cut the margin to 54-44, but that was as close as they came as Kestrels wrapped up the win with a 12-6 final quarter. Jane Yu led the hosts with 22 points with Daisy Golan adding eight and Olivier Ackers seven.
